Google docs
I’m sure it’s of no suprise for most people but I have recently discovered google docs. I’ve found it quite useful for updating spreadsheets when using many different computers. Not having to check file versions and ensuring you’re carrying a document physically with you is quite enlightening. Maybe cloud computing has a place in the world after all? The main obvious downside is of course that it is completely useless when you’re disconnected from the internet.

Apple event 20th October 2010
Engadget has reported that Apple will have a “Back to the Mac” event on the 20th of October. I’d hazard a guess that the event will coincide with a release of some portable hardware. I think it would be fair to say 10.7 will be also announced with the name Lion. I wouldn’t expect to have a Lion on your desktop for at least a year given previous releases.

Dictionary tool in Mac OsX
Whilst I knew that the dictionary tool was in Mac OsX for quite some time I noticed today that it has a few additional features that are quite nifty. Primarily the thesaurus and being able to search wikipedia from within the same interface.

Oh Microsoft…
The more things change the more things stay the same. 20 years in and I still have to restart my computer for an update to some blogging software?

iPhone 4 crash
My iPhone 4 crashed today. It became completely unresponsive to the power button and hard reset. I plugged it into a power source (I knew it should have at least 70% power left) but it was still unresponsive. Several hours later I performed a hard reset and the phone was working again. Why did it crash? Who knows. I’m running official software (no jailbreak here) no updates are available and the only hard-core thing I had done with the phone all day was make a phone call! I hope this doesn’t become a common occurrence with the new device. That said, I do really like the phone, the screen and it’s revised camera. But if the phone becomes completely unresponsive it really fails at it’s primary purpose.

Apple Battery Charger
Whilst I have heard of the Apple battery charger, it has recently come to my attention due to a staff request for one at work. I have heard on the TWIT podcasts that the batteries included with the Apple battery charger are actually the same chemical make-up as the Sanyo Eneloop batteries. These batteries can retain 80 percent of their charged capacity and potentially last for up to 10 years of service life. Whilst people could just go out and buy any rechargeable batteries I think it is good there is now an option for those who will only buy products branded with a fruity label.

Apple nerdy stuff
Unusual statement by Apple on the White iPhone 4 White models of Apple’s new iPhone® 4 have proven more challenging to manufacture than expected, and as a result they will not be available until the second half of July. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected. As far as I am aware there isn’t a current official statement on the availability of the 4th generation iPhone in Australia. Phone carriers are all suggesting that it will be ‘coming soon’… 37signals has released an iPad app called Draft. It is quite simple in design but by not trying to do too much it actually seems quite handy for knocking out design sketches. The price of $9.99 feels like a bit of a stretch though. Derek Powazek has posted some photos taken from his … Continue reading

Blogging from an iPad
I was completely unaware that word press had released a new version of the iPhone application until I started playing around with an iPad. Seems quite acceptable to type on.
