It is more important that innocence be protected than it is that guilt be punished

It is more important that innocence be protected than it is that guilt be punished, for guilt and crimes are so frequent in this world that they cannot all be punished. But if innocence itself is brought to the bar and condemned, perhaps to die, then the citizen will say, “whether I do good or whether I do evil is immaterial, for innocence itself is no protection,” and if such an idea as that were to take hold in the mind of the citizen that would be the end of security whatsoever. John Adams 2nd president of the United States of America.

Resolutions

Mistakes were made, there is no doubt about that. Sitting here I have a movie playing in my head of series of events – of incorrect thinking and extremely poor choices that caused me stumble down the path which I eventually travelled. No matter how much I regret how things turned out, it won’t make the situation any better. What’s done is done and no matter how badly I wish I could make amends it doesn’t appear like a situation is going to present itself to lead to that end. I could keep going down this path or I could try to repair myself, to seek help. To assist myself to improve rather than always looking for the next person who might need a hand. In order to have a future with anyone – to help anyone. I first need … Continue reading

HP Mininote 1000 using the intel Atom 1.6

Hewlett Packard seems to have updated their HP Mini note to the new model HP Mini 1000. Whilst the HP Mininote seemed to get rave reviews for an excellent typing keyboard and build quality, concerns were raised over the performance of the VIA processor that was apparently inferior to the Atom. In the web advertisement that leapt up in front of me earlier it appears that this product has been revised with the new model using the Intel Atom 1.6 like it’s obvious competitor the MSI Wind. This new model also has the option of a 10″ screen in addition to the existing 8.9″ so with interest I was wondering if this machine would muscle out the MSI Wind with similar specs to match the formidable typing ability. Unfortunately I can see a chink in the armour of this new … Continue reading

Two types of battery testing

Today I thought I would try bringing in the eeepc to work on the train as a side by side comparison with travelling with the 15.4” macbook pro. Despite being half of the weight of the Apple it wasn’t noticably lighter but it felt less awkward since the eeepc can basically fit entirely in the palm of my super-sized hands. For pure writing efficiency the keyboard works ok but with large hands comes great large fingertips so I need to be super accurate to avoid hitting two keys at the same time. As part of this trial I am investigating how long the battery lasts when using low screen brightness, no wifi, no multimedia but sleeping when I’m actively doing work instead of being shutdown and being reaonably used for typing and editing. With the MBP (admittedly I don’t use … Continue reading

I’m online! Naked ADSL2+ and VOIP

Well it’s finally all working. The DSL was took about 30 seconds to setup but I spent about 4 hours working on my Linksys VOIP box before I had all the functionality available to me. I’m pleasantly surprised though to find the calls over VOIP are crystal clear and reliable. Surprisingly the voice quality appears better than PSTN. I plan to write up a quick guide to iinet VOIP with my Linksys VOIP box soon.

Telstra arrives!

After spending another 25 minutes on hold to iinet last night the support person informed me that he had scheduled for a Telstra technician to correct the ‘fault’ with my connection at 7am this morning. At 7:30am I tried using my telephone and was disappointed to find it still working so I made breakfast and got ready for work. As I was stepping out the door at 8am a Telstra van pulled into my driveway and he called me on my home phone to say he was commencing work and could he come inside to test the connection inside. He asked me about this eye eye net thing and is it true it works without having a telephone number. Does this VOIP thing I’ve heard of have a telephone number too? He tested my 2nd telephone port and found the … Continue reading

So long without the internet! (Where is my naked DSL iinet?)

When I moved house over christmas I left the world of having broadband behind. Unwittingly I stepped into a world of difficulties when I attempted to setup iinet’s new Naked DSL at my new house. My first two attempts resulted in a “No such service address” which iinet said was a response from Telstra that my house couldn’t have a telephone connection. Given there was two telephone points in the kitchen and there was a ‘connect with optus’ letter in my letterbox I presumed that someone who previously lived there had used a working telephone. I then decided that rather than fighting with a webpage and long telephone support queues I would submit an application to Telstra to have a telephone line connected. Within a few days a Telstra technician arrived and after a few false attempts at connecting the … Continue reading

Western Digital ships energy efficient hard drives

Western Digital has recently started shipping a new range of hard drives that claim to have a reduced energy consumption compared to the competition. 38% reduced power consumption Consumes 4-5w less that competitors drives Save up to $14.00 per year in electricity costs Reduced heat and noise This reduction apparently equates to a reduction of CO2 emissions by up to 13.8 kilograms per drive per year – the equivalent of taking a car off the road for 3 days each year. Whilst this may or may not sound like much, think of how many computers are purchased every year.

How to install the Opera browser on the EeePC

I’ve noticed that some people have been giving advice that people should be using the dpkg command to install pretty much any software on the EeePC that isn’t in the default Synaptic repository. Whilst this will install most software and I advised using it with the Skype beta, it’s best only using the command if the software isn’t in a repository. Some of the software you might wish to install may require other software and if these dependencies aren’t met it could cause problems with your system. Fortunately apt-get and the Synaptic package manager can resolve dependencies and will install everything that is required. In the case of the Opera browser, a quick google search gave me the repository that Opera have provided. This page lists a number of repositories that can be added to the Synaptic package manager, or … Continue reading
