Apple event 20th October 2010

Engadget has reported that Apple will have a “Back to the Mac” event on the 20th of October. I’d hazard a guess that the event will coincide with a release of some portable hardware. I think it would be fair to say 10.7 will be also announced with the name Lion. I wouldn’t expect to have a Lion on your desktop for at least a year given previous releases.

Dictionary tool in Mac OsX

Whilst I knew that the dictionary tool was in Mac OsX for quite some time I noticed today that it has a few additional features that are quite nifty. Primarily the thesaurus and being able to search wikipedia from within the same interface.

iPhone 4 crash

My iPhone 4 crashed today. It became completely unresponsive to the power button and hard reset. I plugged it into a power source (I knew it should have at least 70% power left) but it was still unresponsive. Several hours later I performed a hard reset and the phone was working again. Why did it crash? Who knows. I’m running official software (no jailbreak here) no updates are available and the only hard-core thing I had done with the phone all day was make a phone call! I hope this doesn’t become a common occurrence with the new device. That said, I do really like the phone, the screen and it’s revised camera. But if the phone becomes completely unresponsive it really fails at it’s primary purpose.

Apple Battery Charger

Whilst I have heard of the Apple battery charger, it has recently come to my attention due to a staff request for one at work. I have heard on the TWIT podcasts that the batteries included with the Apple battery charger are actually the same chemical make-up as the Sanyo Eneloop batteries. These batteries can retain 80 percent of their charged capacity and potentially last for up to 10 years of service life. Whilst people could just go out and buy any rechargeable batteries I think it is good there is now an option for those who will only buy products branded with a fruity label.

Apple nerdy stuff

Unusual statement by Apple on the White iPhone 4 White models of Apple’s new iPhone® 4 have proven more challenging to manufacture than expected, and as a result they will not be available until the second half of July. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected. As far as I am aware there isn’t a current official statement on the availability of the 4th generation iPhone in Australia. Phone carriers are all suggesting that it will be ‘coming soon’…   37signals has released an iPad app called Draft. It is quite simple in design but by not trying to do too much it actually seems quite handy for knocking out design sketches. The price of $9.99 feels like a bit of a stretch though.   Derek Powazek has posted some photos taken from his … Continue reading

Blogging from an iPad

I was completely unaware that word press had released a new version of the iPhone application until I started playing around with an iPad. Seems quite acceptable to type on.

Interesting iPad info

I heard on macbreak weekly that if you use the USB kit with an ipad it will recognise & work with external audio devices such as headsets and USB soundcards for the purpose of recording audio. Not bad for a long battery audio recording device!

Two types of battery testing

Today I thought I would try bringing in the eeepc to work on the train as a side by side comparison with travelling with the 15.4” macbook pro. Despite being half of the weight of the Apple it wasn’t noticably lighter but it felt less awkward since the eeepc can basically fit entirely in the palm of my super-sized hands. For pure writing efficiency the keyboard works ok but with large hands comes great large fingertips so I need to be super accurate to avoid hitting two keys at the same time. As part of this trial I am investigating how long the battery lasts when using low screen brightness, no wifi, no multimedia but sleeping when I’m actively doing work instead of being shutdown and being reaonably used for typing and editing. With the MBP (admittedly I don’t use … Continue reading

Pre-Macworld prediction

I’ve noticed Dell’s new tablet pc has 64GB Solid state storage. If Apple release a subnotebook computer there is a good chance that it’ll also contain this drive. The question is what does the big banner at the front of the conference “Something is in the air” mean?

Poor form Glenn

I must say I was very disappointed to discover that the anti-apple fanboi ‘hacking’ of Glenn Wolsey’s blog (amongst others) by the pseudonym Malcor was a hoax set up by Macheist for the purpose of promotion. Macheist is a website that resells Macintosh shareware. When I emailed Glenn my condolences I asked him if he was aware of by what manner his WordPress blog had been replaced by a static rotten apple image. He claimed to be still investigating the attack and ignorant of how it occured. It turns out he was fully aware that his site was going to be modified in advance, and continued to play dumb after the fact. He has since apologised but I fail to understand why any of them would willing incite concern in the online community as to the security of WordPress and … Continue reading
