Wheel vs Log
An aspect of mountain biking that I am currently finding most challenging is the mounting of a log on an uphill slope. Typically because the trails I ride have a build up of dirt on the uphill side making them quite easy to roll over on the downhill journey but have most of the dirt washed away from them on the bottom of the step. Usually when climbing the hill I have my body weighted low over the bars and I’m pedalling at a constant pace to maintain traction but when faced with the log I attempt to unweight the bars which causes the front wheel to lift which either has one of two results. 1) I lift the front of the bike too fast and too far leaving me in a situation where I have to quickly unclip from … Continue reading

36km and a touch of asthma
I only made it through 36km of riding tonight but thankfully I didn’t get any leg cramps until much later in the ride. I believe I’m actually making a noticeable improvement. The downside to this ride was I started getting asthma on the home stretch. I made it home ok but I’ve learnt my lesson about pushing myself riding especially in the middle of winter.

13+44+39 = tired
A workmate has suggested that the two of us enter the Noosa enduro which is on in about two months. We would be choosing the ‘easy’ 50km offroad option rather than the more extreme 100km course. To build up to this I’ve started riding my mountain bike again. Monday was ok. I rode 13km and afterwards I felt fine. The next day I was due to meet up with my workmate, but I got a bit lost on my first time through a suburb and unfortunately she left the meeting point possibly seconds before my arrival as it was cold and she had been waiting for me for a while. I decided to do the ride by myself and it was all going quite well – I was surprising myself but about 30km into the ride I started cramping up and … Continue reading

My legs are killing me.
I rode 44km tonight on my mountain bike. Just on bike paths and streets doing a lap of Brisbane. My legs are killing me, my stomach has been churning and my legs are periodically cramping. When I was about 30km in I started to get worried I wouldn’t be able to get home but somehow I managed to go the distance. Whilst 44km isn’t a big deal for probably many people who ride bicycles, the next biggest ride I’ve done in recent history was 13km and that was yesterday! Talk about stepping it up! I’m a little worried that my legs will cramp up in my sleep and how sore they might be tomorrow but I was serious about getting back into cycling. I’m not sure if 44km is a good place to start though. I might take tomorrow night off the … Continue reading

Return from the void
This week I made the decision that I really ought to be writing more often. If I did have any regular readers I’m sure I’ve lost you all now through my lack of regularity. The truth of the matter is I’ve been so busy over the last month or so that I haven’t had the time nor the inclination to write much unfortunately. There has been quite a few big changes in my life and I’ve undertaken activities that take up alot of my free time outside of work, and I’ve not at the break time at work to fill you in on what has been happening. I’ve recently changed jobs. I now work in the city, but I have to get up very early in order to make the train (5:30am or so) but when I get home from … Continue reading

My mountain bike
I haven’t seriously ridden my mountain bike since I got back from Asia last year. This is a tremendous shame because I really enjoy riding and my health was really improving as the weight dropped. I hope to get back into it soon. This photo is from 2007 where I had let my friend Daniel ride my bike down a tricky bit of hill to try it out and when he stopped the bike stood perfectly balanced for around 5 minutes. I managed to take a few photos before it fell over.
